If you haven’t heard yet, the movie A Dog’s Purpose might not be all it’s cracked up to be. A video was released on Jan. 18, 2017 showing a scared German Shepherd being forced into a rushing tank of water. The reactions from the public have not been good. People just don’t want to watch a film where an animal has been abused. The Calgary Humane Society told Global News in an article that they cancelled their viewing of the shoe because they didn’t want to be associated with the movie. PETA has called for a boycott of the film.
After looking into all the allegations and watching the video myself, and I have to say it is hard to watch. It got me thinking, how many more movies involving animals have had this happen? As a child, I watched all the animal classics, Homeward Bound, Air Bud, Bingo, Free Willy, and many others. Were all those animals exploited and abused for our entertainment? If you have a weak stomach I wouldn’t recommend researching into it. Don’t worry I did it for you, and my heart has been ripped out ten times over realizing the hard truth. Animals in Hollywood is anything but glamourous.
Back to A Dog’s Purpose, the infamous scene was shot in Winnipeg of all places. I would be lying if I said the trailer for the movie didn’t bring me to happy tears. It looks like a heartwarming and inspiring film, but after everything I’ve learned I don’t think I’ll be watching it. How about you?
CBC reported that after an investigation American Humane said in a press release that no animals were harmed in the making of A Dog’s Purpose, but that the dog in the video was only “momentarily stressed.”
